Jessica Cutler Textiles

We live in a world that is travelling as quickly as ever towards total automation. Workforces are being replaced by robotics to meet demand and rampant consumerism. Quantity over quality. Impatience over the appreciation for finesse and expertise. Short term low cost over long term value. Few industries have seen this more than in clothing and textiles. Fast fashion and ever changing trends. It seems only the machines can keep up! As a result, the artistry of weaving is a rare skill nowadays. However, we heard about Devon hand weaver Jessica Cutler and had to pay her a visit to see her at her craft.

“I love showing everybody the weaving process, just because I don’t think people understand how much work goes into it”

In Devon’s Exe Valley, nestled in the woods in the grounds of Bickleigh Castle, you find Jessica’s snug and intimate studio. It feels so natural and uncomplicated. Warmed by a tiny wood burner and with the background noise of the radio, you can really feel this is a place where she can lose herself in her creativity and art. Inspired by the surrounding Devon landscape and the rural colours through the window, this can clearly been seen and felt in her finished pieces. And everything is made using only 100% wool. Completely natural, just like the process.
